cott Siedman (b. 1948)
spent one year at UCLA studying with Richard Diebenkorn, and then transferred to Cal Arts where he was mentored by John Baldessari and graduated with a BFA in 1971. His first show of erotica, Dirty Pictures, was in 1989 at Morphos Gallery in San Francisco. Sacred Porn was shown at the Julie Rico Gallery, followed by a solo show at Robert Berman Gallery, both in Santa Monica, CA. He has also shown at Bert Green Fine Art in Los Angeles. Film credits as a production designer include two films, Cock and Bull Story and Laurel Canyon; set design credits include shows in Los Angeles at Celebration, The Powerhouse, Electric Lodge, Hidden, Stella Adler, Ojai Shakespeare Festival, and The Fountain and Lilian Theaters.Seidman’s mission as an artist is to confront what he sees as an essentially insane culture regarding human sexuality. He paints sex in daylight, in the manner of old master religious paintings to celebrate human sexuality. “My interest in the pornographic image has, from my childhood, coincided with a fascination for religious art. What they share is the power to transport the viewer into states of arousal, ecstasy, outrage, laughter, fear, and on the deepest level, compassion.”
